Felony Murder Reform
Historically, many Minnesotans were convicted of “murder” who did not commit an act resulting in a person’s death. Rather, Minnesota’s “felony murder law” permitted prosecutors to charge a person with murder who lacked any intent to harm a person or were unaware a killing could occur. Changes to Minnesota law address this issue and those already impacted by felony murder convictions.

Prosecutor Initiated Resentencing
Minnesota is the sixth state in the nation to enact a Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing (PIR) law. This law permits, but does not require, prosecutors in Minnesota to request a court to shorten a person’s criminal sentence. Come learn how one can request review of a sentence and which counties are actively pursuing resentencing.
2/8/24
Pardons and Commutations
Seeking and obtaining a pardon or commutation is now more accessible and meaningful. Recent changes to the law permit the Board of Pardons to approve more applicants for relief. These changes can reduce a lengthy prison sentence, relieve a person of the many collateral consequences of a criminal conviction, and even restore one’s right to possess a firearm.
1/11/24
Criminal Expungements
The Minnesota Legislature created two separate automatic expungement programs that each have their own eligibility criteria and process. Moreover, it is now easier to expunge criminal records that are not eligible for an automatic expungement. Come learn about these important changes to the law.
